id Quantique's focus is to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions by leveraging the tremendous capabilities offered by Quantum Photonics. The company designs and manufactures hardware products serving two main markets: network security and optical instrumentation.

Toshiba Research Europe Ltd is developing a new approach to information technology that applies the fundamental laws of Quantum Physics to network communications and computing. Quantum Information Technology concerns the transport and processing of information using individual particles such as electrons or photons. Toshiba has exploited quantum encoding to create a practical system for secure communication over fibre optical cables. This is just the first in a series of quantum innovations which promises to revolutionise the entire IT industry over the next two decades.

The Quantum Information Processing (QIP) Group is part of the HP Advanced Studies Program and is based in HP Laboratories, Bristol, UK. As devices become smaller the principles of quantum mechanics become increasingly more important. Many new theoretical ideas have emerged and fundamental quantum physics experiments have progressed in leaps and bounds over the last few years. Consequently, aspects of genuine Quantum Information Processing could soon begin to be viable commercially.
